Navigating Grief and Loss
Grief is one of the most profoundly difficult experiences in the human journey. Whether mourning the loss of a loved one, your former good health, or the slow deterioration of a family member's mind and memories due to dementia or illness, grief takes an enormous emotional toll.
Yet even in our sorrow, grief is the natural process of healing after loss. It is the heart's way of processing pain and beginning to mend. As heavy as grief may feel, it is a sign of the depth of love you hold in your heart.
For caregivers tending to loved ones with dementia or debilitating illnesses, grief can be complex. There is the pain of seeing the gradual loss of your loved one's vitality and essence, compounded by the draining physical and emotional demands of caregiving. You are losing your loved one in increments while still caring for them daily.
Please be gentle with yourself through this arduous journey. Allow yourself to experience the full weight of your grief, while also caring for your own needs. Seek support from counsellors, support groups, friends and family. And remind yourself that continuing to love your ailing loved one - and being loved by them, however fragmented - is a profound gift.
No matter the exact nature of your loss, the waves of grief may crest unexpectedly. Intense emotions like anger, guilt, yearning and profound sadness may wash over you. This is normal and healthy. The only way past grief is through it. Be patient and nurture yourself through the process.
In time, the acuteness of grief will ease, becoming a quiet ache or a sweet memory. Until then, let this mantra buoy you: "Grief is love with no place to go." Your tears are the river that will lead you across the riverbed of loss, to the far shores of healing. Have hope - you will reach those shores.
