The Lifeblood of Relationships: Communication

At the heart of every flourishing relationship lies healthy, consistent communication. Communication is the lifeblood that nourishes intimacy, understanding, and that treasured feeling of being known by another person.

Yet communication between partners, family members, or friends doesn't always flow smoothly. Differing communication styles, unprocessed resentments, or life stresses can form plaque in the arteries of your relationship over time, slowing the healthy exchange of thoughts and feelings.

Poor communication can make us feel isolated from those we love most. You may operate on parallel tracks rather than being in synch - cohabitating but lacking true connection and intimacy. Anger, assumptions, and criticism may come to dominate your interactions.

When this happens, it's important to remember that communication is a skill that can be practiced and improved. With self-awareness and commitment from both parties, even the most blocked relational arteries can be unclogged and repaired.

Start by checking your mindset about communication. Are you listening without judgement when your partner speaks? Are you making assumptions instead of asking clarifying questions? Is defensiveness causing you to miss important points? Approach with openness, patience, and the genuine desire to understand the other person.

Agree to set aside designated time to communicate as a couple or family with no distractions. Come prepared to talk about core issues or concerns but leave space to simply catch up and share about your day. The little moments of connection are as important as working through the bigger problems.
If you find yourselves stuck in cycles of miscommunication and hurt, don't be afraid to ask for outside support. Counseling can provide invaluable tools and a neutral perspective to help reopen the lines of communication productively.

With empathy, effort, and commitment, even the tensest relationships can be revived through the power of communication. Like a wellspring, it has the power to replenish the emotional bonds between one another and create more love and life.
